How to Choose the Most Comfortable Camping Chairs
As I said before, we’ve bought quite a few different camping chairs over the years. I’ve now figured out that there is quite a bit to think about if you want to purchase the best folding camp chair the first time. So to save yourself the hassle, I urge you to spend some time considering the below factors. This will help you buy good camping chairs that will last you years and years.
Camping Chair Types
First up, camping chairs come in a range of different weights, sizes, comfort levels, and price points. Below I’ve briefly summarised the most common types of camping chairs.
Quad Fold Chairs 
The quad fold chair is probably what most people think about when they think about a portable camping chair. This type of chair for camping folds in on itself so that it is long and thin when folded.
Quad fold chairs are great lightweight, compact camping chairs and don’t take up too much space in the back of the car. However, there is a huge range in their weights, sizes and differences in quality.
At the very least, you usually find these sorts of outdoor folding chairs come with a drink holder.
We’ve had super cheap quad fold chairs (you’ve probably even got a few of these cheapy Bunning chairs lying around at home) and have now upgraded to some super comfy, top quality chairs – these are fantastic if you’re after a good chair that doesn’t take up much room or don’t have a big budget.
Directors Chairs
Director chairs have a comfortable and sturdy design and often come with accessories such as a built in table and cup holder. However, the seated position in a director’s chair is fairly rigid and flat, and the seats have a low back, so you must sit in a more upright position.
The downside to a director’s chair is that they are usually much heavier and bulkier than a quad fold chair. Plus, directors’ chairs have a flat fold design which means they take up a bit of space even when folded.
Flat Folding Camping Chairs
Flat folding camping chairs are very similar to a director’s chair in that they fold flat; however, they feature a tall back that usually has several recline positions, making them much more comfortable. Some of these high back camping chairs even have a footrest so that you can lie right back.

We used to have flat folding camping chairs and just loved them, but in the end, we found them too bulky to carry with all our other camping gear.

Yes, there is such a thing as camping lounge chairs. A camping lounger allows you to lie back and completely relax while on your camping trip or snuggle with your loved one in the same chair.
However, lounge camping chairs are super bulky and heavy and are only recommended when you have plenty of space to transport them. You’ll also not want to have to cart a camp lounge chair far from your car.
Camping Stools
For a super lightweight and compact camp chair, you’ll want a folding camp stool. These compact foldable outdoor chairs are designed for hikers and are made from incredibly light material, and really don’t offer you much more than a place to sit. Some camping stools are so compact that you can put them in your backpack.
Kids Camping Chairs 
For families with little kids, you may even want to buy some kids’ camping chairs. A children’s camping chair is basically the same as an adult’s camping chair but smaller. Usually, these are quad folding chairs and have basic accessories such as a cup holder. Kids grow out of these super quick, though, so I’d only consider one if your child is a toddler.
You can also get a camping high chair for babies, which is brilliant.
Weight & Folded Size
The chair’s weight is perhaps the first thing you should consider when looking for good quality camping chairs. If you are after the best light camping chair, you’re going to be a little more limited in the type of chair you can purchase. Whereas if weight is not an issue, you can get yourself a pretty luxurious kind of camping chair.
Also, consider the space available in your vehicle to transport the chairs. You’ll find a more comfortable padded camping chair takes up some serious space in your car, whereas a simple light small camping chair will take up barely any space at all.
If you have a small vehicle and need the best compact camping chair you can get, there are some good options, but you will compromise comfort. If you need an ultra lightweight camping chair, you will most likely pay a little bit more as these camping chairs will need to be made with thin but strong materials, which are more expensive than thick steel.
Just decide upfront if the weight and size of the chair are going to be an issue, as you don’t want to purchase the Taj Mahal of camping chairs only to discover there is no room in the vehicle and you have to leave them behind and bring your Bunnings cheapy ones after all.
Quality
For great outdoor camping chairs that last for years, you will need to spend more than $10 a chair. Cheap camp chairs are made with crappy fabrics that tear, sag and fray and have absolutely no padding for your comfort.
You can still get budget quality chairs around the $50 mark, so you don’t have to spend a fortune. These chairs are made with good quality fabrics and a durable frame and hardware.
Think about it – you can buy a cheap $10 chair every year or a good quality, comfortable budget chair just once. It may seem like a hefty upfront investment, but it’s well worth it in the long run.
Comfort
So if weight and size are not going to be an issue for you, you’re in luck my friend, as you can get yourself some super comfy cool camping chairs! But be warned, the ultimate camping chair is not cheap; you are looking at spending around the $100 mark and then some. So if budget is of concern, stick with your basic lightweight camping chair.
In terms of comfort, you can get chairs that fully recline back, chairs with lots of nice comfortable padding, a large 2 seater camping chair to snuggle with your loved one, and even get a rocking camping chair! But, really, you are just limited by how much space you have in your vehicle and how much you are willing to spend.

While most come with a cup holder built into the armrest, I find these unstable, and you’re likely to spill your beer! Plus, with a little table, you’ve got somewhere for your snacks too – because you know otherwise you’d have to walk over to the table – and who wants to do that?
Other accessories you can get include built in little coolers or even little storage pockets for your phone and keys etc.
Budget
I briefly mentioned this above, but you may be shocked at how expensive a good quality camping chair can cost you! But if you go camping at least once a year, every year, oh my friend, they are so worth it – you will thank me for it, I promise.
Think about it; you do spend quite a bit of time in your camp chair, so you might as well have the most comfortable camping chair Australia has on offer.
But having said that, if this is your very first camping trip or budget is an issue, you can get by with $10 camping chairs from Bunnings. Just know that you will be replacing these in a few years and, no doubt, with some more expensive yet oh so comfortable camping chairs.
