How to Choose the Most Comfortable Camping Chairs

Like I said before, we’ve bought quite a few different camping over the years.  I’ve now figured out that there is quite a bit to think about if you want to purchase the best folding camp chair the first time.  So to save yourself the hassle I urge you to spend some time considering the below factors.  This will help you buy good camping chairs that will last you years and years.

Camping Chair Types

First up, camping chairs come in a range of different weights, sizes, levels of comforts and price points.  Below I’ve briefly provided a summary of the main different types of camping chairs.

Quad Fold Chairs Coleman King Cooler

The quad fold chair is probably what most people think about when they think about a portable camping chair.  This is the type of chair that folds in on itself, so that when its folded it is a long thin package.

Quad fold chairs are known for being great lightweight chairs and don’t take up too much space in the back of the car.  However there is a huge range in their weights and sizes.

You usually find at the very least these sorts of chairs come with a drink holder.

Directors ChairsColeman Directors

Director chairs have a comfortable and sturdy design and often come with accessories such as a built in table and cup holder.  The seated position in a director’s chair is fairly rigid and flat and the seats have a low back so you must sit in a more upright position.

The downside to a director’s chair is that they are usually much heavier and bulkier than a quad fold chair.  Plus directors chairs have a flat fold design which means they take up a bit of space even when folded.

Flat Folding Camping ChairsOztrail Cascade

Flat folding camping chairs are very similar to a director’s chair in that they fold flat, however they feature a tall back which usually has a number of recline positions making them much more comfortable.  Some of these high back camping chairs even have a footrest, so you can lie right back.

Like directors chairs, a flat folding chair usually comes with a range of built in accessories such as a table and cup holder.

Flat folding camping chairs are usually one of the heaviest camping chairs as well as being bulky even when in the folded position, so you’ll need more space to transport them.

We have flat folding camping chair and just love them – this is what I’d recommend if you have the space to transport them.

Oztrail Galaxy

Camping Lounge Chairs

Yes there is such a thing as camping lounge chairs.  A camping lounger allows you to lie back and completely relax while on your camping trip.

Lounge camping chairs however are super bulky and heavy and only recommended when you have plenty of space to transport them as well as when you’re not camping too far from your car.

Coleman Stool

Camping Stools

For a super lightweight and compact chair, you’ll want a folding camp stool.  These chairs are designed for hikers and are made from incredibly light material and really don’t offer you much more than a place to sit.  Some camping stools are so compact that you can put them in your backpack.

Kids Camping Chairs

Oztrail Highchair

For families with little kids you may even want to buy some kid’s camping chairs.  A children’s camping chair is basically the same as an adults camping chair but on a smaller scale.  Usually these are quad folding chairs and have basic accessories such as a cup holder.  Kid’s grow out of these super quick though, so I’d only consider one if your child is a toddler.

For babies you can also get a camping high chair which is brilliant.

Weight & Folded Size

Perhaps the first thing you should consider when looking for good quality camping chairs is the weight of the chair. If you are after the best light camping chair, then you’re going to be a little more limited to the type of chair you can purchase.  Whereas if weight is not an issue you can get yourself a pretty luxurious type of camping chair.

Also consider the space you have available in your vehicle to transport the chairs.  You’ll find a more comfortable padded camping chair can take up some serious space in your car, whereas as a simple light small camping chair will take up barely any space at all.

If you have a small vehicle and need the best compact camping chair you can get, there are some good options, but you will be compromising on comfort.  If you need an ultra lightweight camping chair, you will most likely pay a little bit more as these camping chairs will need to be made with thin but strong materials which are more expensive than thick steel.

Just decide up front if the weight and size of the chair is going to be an issue, as you don’t want to purchase the Taj Mahal of camping chairs to discover there is no room in the vehicle and you have to leave them behind and bring your Bunnings cheapy ones after all.

Man & Son Camping

Quality

For great outdoors camping chairs that last for years, you will need to spend more than $10 a chair.  Cheaper chairs are made with crappy fabrics that tear, sag and fray and have absolutely no padding for your comfort.

You can still get budget quality chairs around the $30 – $40 mark, so you don’t have to spend a fortune.  These chairs are made with good quality fabrics as well as a durable frame and hardware.

Think about it – you can buy a cheap $10 chair every year, or a good quality comfortable budget chair just once.  It may seem like a hefty upfront investment, but in the long run it’s well worth it.

Comfort

So if weight and size is not going to be an issue for you, you’re in luck my friend as you can get yourself some super comfy cool camping chairs!  But be warned the ultimate camping chair is not cheap, you are looking at spending around the $100 mark and then some. So if budget is of a concern, stick with your basic lightweight camping chair.

In terms of comfort you can get chairs that fully recline back, chairs with lots of nice comfortable padding, a large 2 seater camping chair so you can snuggle with your loved one, you can even get a rocking camping chair! Really you are just limited by how much space you have in your vehicle and how much you are willing to spend.

Accessories

The best rated camping chairs come with a range of great accessories, in fact even the cheap lightweight camping chairs usually come with a few accessories too.

For the best camping chair experience, I can highly recommend a camping chair with table built in.  While most come with a cup holder, I find these are bit unstable and you’re likely to spill your beer!  Plus with a little table you’ve got somewhere for your snacks too – because you know otherwise you’d have to walk over to the table – and who wants to do that!

Other accessories you can get include built in little coolers or even little storage pockets for your phone and keys etc.

Budget

I did briefly mention this above, but you may well be shocked at how expensive a good quality camping chair can cost you! But if you go camping at least once a year, every year, oh my friend they are so worth it – you will thank me for it I promise.

Think about it, you do spend quite a bit of time in your camp chair, so you might as well have one that’s super comfortable.

But having said that, if this is your very first camping trip, or budget is an issue, you can get by with $10 camping chairs from Bunnings. Just know that you will be replacing these in a few years, and no doubt with some more expensive yet oh so comfortable camping chairs.  There are however a few other good quality budget options which I’ve included in this guide.  These ones will last the distance.

Unfortunately this reclining folding camp chair is pretty heavy and bulky though.  These chairs weigh 9 kg which are the heaviest in these reviews, although surprisingly they do pack down a little more compact then some of the other chairs in this guide.

Dune 4WD Deluxe Nomad XL Chair

Camp Chairs

We recently bought these Dune 4WD Deluxe Nomad XL chairs which we are really happy with.  They are not as luxurious as the previous Sun Lounger chairs, but they do offer multiple recline positions and are super comfortable for your camping trips.  These chairs are great for anyone after the best outdoor camping chairs which are super comfy.

What I love most about these chairs are the 8 recline positions.  No there isn’t a footrest, but with a lovely padded seat, back and head rest you’ll still be more than comfortable in these chairs.  These outdoor folding camping chairs also feature a great little built in table which can be tucked away when not in use and it also has a cooler bag for keeping your drinks cool or just for storing your valuables.

These high back folding camping chairs are made from a durable polyester fabric and feature a heavy duty powder coated steel frame.  They are also capable of holding a maximum weight of 120kg.

At 8.5kg the Dune 4WD Nomad chairs are reasonably heavy, and they are bulky too, so you’ll need plenty of space to transport them.  But if that’s not a problem you’ll be pleased you did as you’ll have a comfy spot to relax throughout your camping trip.

Oztrail Cascade 8 Position Deluxe Chair with Side Table

Oztrail Cascade

If you like the look of the previous Dune 4WD Nomad chairs, but need something capable of accommodating a larger weight, then check out the OZtrail Cascade 8.  This strong camping chair is in many ways very similar to the Dune 4WD Nomad chairs however can hold a maximum weight of a whopping 170kg!

These heavy duty camping chairs are made with a 22mm lightweight aluminium tube frame and a durable 600 denier polyester fabric.  Thanks to the aluminium frame, these chairs are a little lighter than the previous Dune 4WD chairs weighing just 6.5kg.  They are however overall similar in size once packed away.

Like the Dune 4WD chairs, the OZtrail Cascade 8, has 8 recline positions, so no doubt you’ll find a nice comfy position to relax.  The headrest is completely adjustable which is a nice bonus and the built in table as a handy cup holder too.

The OZtrail Cascade 8 certainly aren’t a cheap camping chair, but if you’re after a super comfortable camping chair capable of holding the maximum weight, these aluminium camping chairs certainly are one to consider.  The only camping chair in these reviews with a higher weight rating is the Oztent King Goanna (see below).

Best Camping Directors Chair: Oztent Gecko Camping Chair with Side Table

Oztent Gecko

Moving on to some director camping chairs now, lets check out the Oztent Gecko camping chair with side table.  These are excellent camping chairs and perfect for anyone searching for the best camping directors chair.

These are really durable and luxurious camping chairs with the ability to hold a maximum of 150kg.  The chairs feature a durable 600 denier polyester fabric with a powder coated steel frame.  Overall they are reasonably light at 5.5kg, but they are still fairly bulky once folded down – certainly more bulky then the next directors chair in these reviews.

What I really love about these low back camping chairs is the side table.  Unlike most other camping chairs with a side table, this table is fully adjustable so you can have it over your lap while you eat or at your side when you just need somewhere to rest your drink.  Other cool features include the padded arm rests which are removable, great for cleaning and the adjustable lumbar support.

For anyone after a great quality directors chair, the Oztent Gecko is certainly a great one to consider.  It is an incredibly sturdy chair with a few neat features and comes with a whopping 5 year warranty so you can purchase with the upmost confidence.

Coleman Directors Plus Chair

Coleman Directors

If you’re after are cheaper directors chair, another good one to check out is the Coleman Directors Plus Chair.  As well as cheaper than the previous director’s chair, these Coleman camping chairs are also a little lighter and more compact once packed away.

These are a simple looking chair with a stylish lightweight aluminum frame and a durable 600 denier PVC backed polyester.  Both the seat and backrest are fully padded for additional comfort and the chair features a built in table with cup holder.

This Coleman folding camp chair is only capable of accommodating a maximum weight if 135kg, compared to the previous director chair which was 150kg.  However thanks to the aluminum frame, these chairs are also almost 2kg lighter which is a massive difference.  Plus they are overall much more compact too, so perfect if you’re concerned about space when transporting the chairs.

If you don’t need the added weight capacity of the previous Oztent Gecko directors chair, I think the Coleman Directors Plus chair is the perfect choice.  It’s a stylish simple chair which is lightweight, and will no doubt provide with you a comfortable spot to sit during your camping trips.

Oztrail Sovereign

Now to your more traditional style camping chairs, the quad fold chairs.  First we have a good choice if you’re just after the best value camping chairs.  These OZtrail Sovereign Cooler Arm Chairs are the cheapest in these reviews but still great quality camping chairs.

If you’re after the best ultralight camping chair, the OZtrail Sovereign is a good one to consider.  Weighing in at just 3kg this is the lightest chair in these reviews, yet the chair is still capable of holding a maximum weight of 130kg.  They also pack down nice and compact too.

These compact folding camping chairs are made with a 17.5mm steel frame and feature are hard wearing 600 denier polyester fabric.  Unlike most of the chairs in these reviews, these chairs only feature a single layer of fabric though and don’t have any additional padding, which means they won’t be as comfortable.

Despite being a budget camping chair, the OZtrail Sovereign chairs still have a cup holder and a cooler bag on the other side which can also be used for storage.

If you’re just starting out and after some cheap camping chairs or something for the kids, these OZtrail Sovereign camping chairs are a good one to consider.  If however you’re after the ultimate comfortable place to relax during your camping trips – consider one of the other chairs in these reviews.

Coleman King Size Cooler Chair

Coleman King Cooler

Fairly similar to the previous quad fold camping chair, the Coleman King Size Cooler Chair is another good one to consider if you’re after a basic, cheap and lightweight camping chair.

Weighing in at 4kg, this chair is slightly heavier than the previous OZtrail quad fold chair, but nevertheless lightweight compared to most chairs in these reviews.  Like the OZtrail this Coleman chair can also accommodate a maximum weight of 130kg.

The Coleman King Cooler chair is made with durable 600 denier polyester and features a 19mm steel frame.  This is mostly where you will see the difference between the OZtrail and this chair as the OZtrail features a 17.5mm steel frame, so you can expect a slightly more durable and sturdier product with the Coleman chair.

The Coleman King Size Cooler chair also features a padded seat with extra wide arms, so perfect for those with a bigger build.  Like most quad fold chairs, it also features a built in cup holder as well as a cooler bag.  A nice little bonus is the mesh magazine style pocket on the back of the chair.

If you can stretch your budget a little further, I’d recommend the Coleman King Size Cooler chair for those after a budget quad fold chair.  It’s only a little more than the previous OZtrail quad fold chair and has a few more added features for both comfort and a longer lasting product.

Oztent King Goanna Chair

Oztent King Goanna

If you’re after a camping chair with a super high weight maximum then you’re going to want to check out the Oztent King Goanna Chair.  This camping chair has a whopping 200kg weight rating!  This is by far the highest weight rating out of all the chairs in this review.

This chair has a heavy duty powder coated steel frame and features a 60 denier fully padded polyester fabric.  The chair is extra wide so plenty of space to get comfy and also has adjustable lumbar straps so you can set to your own body shape.

One thing I really love about this king camp chair is that at the top of the chair, there is a zipper so you can store the bag cover.  This is great as we always find when packing up our site we’re looking for these buggers but it also adds some additional padding to the headrest.

These chairs also have great little storage pockets on both sides, which provide somewhere for your phone or keys, as well as an insulated space for a can of drink.

This is a big camping chair and at 6kgs is the heaviest out of all the quad fold chairs in these reviews.  However if you’re after a super comfortable chare well suited to a tall or larger person needing additional support in the chair, the Oztent King Goanna Chair is well worth considering.  It also comes with a 5 year warranty, so you can purchase with confidence.

Best Moon Chair: Camping OZtrail Jumbo

Oztrail Moon

A moon chair like this OZtrail one is the perfect spot to relax on your camping trip.  With the large circular seat, you can snuggle up in this chair to read a book or even take a nap.  I’ve only included the one moon chair in these reviews, because they do tend to be a bit bulky and you’ll need plenty of space in your vehicle to bring them along.

These Oztrail Moon Jumbo chairs are made with a 16-19mm powder coated steel frame and feature hard wearing 600 denier polyester fabric which has a PVC coating.  Within the double layer of fabric is a foam support to really make this the ultimate relaxation camping chair.

At 7.3kg, this is one of the heavier camping chairs in these reviews, but some of the flat folded chairs are heavier.  The round camping chair is also fairly bulky when folded down, but again not as bulky as some of the chairs in this guide.

These chairs have a weight rating of 150kg, which is pretty good.  Two kids could even comfortably sit here or a little one with their parent.  Unfortunately though the chair doesn’t have any additional features like a cup holder.

So if you like the idea of having a place to get all cosy and snuggle into, then definitely consider the OZtrail Jumbo Moon chair.

Best Double Camping Chair: OZtrail Galaxy

Oztrail Galaxy

How about snuggling up to your loved one on this OZtrail Galaxy double seat camping chair.  These camping chairs are perfect for couples or even families not wanting to have to buy multiple chairs for the kids.  They’re also rather reasonably priced too.

This two seater camping chair has a 17.5mm powder coated steel frame and features a hard wearing 600 denier weave polyester fabric.  It only has limited cushioning though, so you’re not going to find it as comfortable as some of the other chairs mentioned above.

This chair as a weight rating of 240kg, so its more than able to accommodate two people.  The two person camping chair is also reasonably lightweight at just 6.1kg and packs down reasonably compact when you compare it to other single person camping chairs.

The OZtrail Galaxy double folding camping chair also features a mesh pocket at the rear, which is perfect for storing the essentials.  It also has two wine glass holders at either end, which is a bit of a bummer that it doesn’t include standard cup holders.

If you only ever camp with your loved one, then a two seater camping chair might be a great alternative to bringing along individual camping chairs.  Hey you may like to have it all to yourself so you can lay back.  I also recommend them for families with young children as they work out to be a great space saver in those circumstances.

Best Kids Camping Chairs: OZtrail Deluxe Junior Chair

Oztrail Junior

If you have little tiny tots then getting them a kids chair is worthwhile, but if they are say 5 and above, I’d honestly just make do with a cheaper adults chair, as the kids grow out of them so quickly.  If you are after the best kids camping chair, consider the OZtrail Deluxe Junior chair.

Featuring a 14.5mm steel frame and 600 denier polyester fabric, these little camping chairs are just as sturdy as any of the previous chairs in these reviews.  These chairs are super lightweight at just 2kg each yet can still accommodate a weight of up to 80kg.

The OZtrail Deluxe Junior chairs have a drink holder and a little side organiser for the kids personal items.  Plus to avoid chairs accidently folding up as so often happens to little ones, this chair has a locking pin to keep them opened.

These OZtrail Junior chairs come in a range of colours so you can get them in different colours for your kids to avoid confusion over whose is who’s.  These are great little chairs for parents after their child’s very own camping chair.

OZtrail Junior Highchair

Oztrail Highchair

If you have even smaller children, like bubs who aren’t yet walking then you can even purchase a handy camping highchair.  This OZtrail Junior highchair makes camping with super little ones so easy.  It means bubs will have somewhere to sit and at the right height so they can be part of the conversation around the table with the rest of the family.

Like all good camping chairs, this highchair is constructed with a 16mm steel frame with a 600 denier polyester fabric for durability.  Like the previous kids chair, this highchair also features a locking pin, to ensure it doesn’t accidently fold up on itself.

Also for your little ones safety this camping high chair has a safety harness and the plastic tray top makes cleaning a breeze.

At just 3.2kg this is a lightweight chair to bring along on your family camping trips and it packs down reasonably compact too.  Plus with a weight limit of 80kgs, there isn’t any concern about your little one being too heavy for the chair.

This is such a versatile little chair, you could even take it to friends places or BBQs etc – don’t just keep it for family camping trips, as before you know it bub will have outgrown it.
