Choosing the Best Tents for Hiking

When it comes to buying the best hiking tent, it’s different for everyone as it really depends on exactly the sort of camping / hiking trips you will be using the tent for, plus a range of other factors that are unique to you.

So that you buy a hiking tent that is perfect for you, consider the following factors.

Tent Size – Number of People

Best hiking tents Australia

Just like any sort of tent you buy, the first thing you need to consider is how many people you want your tent to accommodate.  Are you looking for the best one man hiking tent, best 2 man hiking tent, 3, 4 – you get the picture.

Now with regards to how many people the tent sleeps, the first thing to remember here is just because the manufacturer says it sleeps 3 people – this doesn’t mean it sleeps 3 people comfortably.  More often than not, what this really means is if you lie together like sardines, then the 3 of you will just fit inside the tent.

Now if it’s you and the love of your life – then perhaps you don’t mind being squeezed together.  But if it’s you and your best made – then you might appreciate a little extra room.

You also want to think about your size.  Some of us have a small build, while others have a larger build.  Some of us a tall, short – you get the picture.  So consider your body shape and size as well as anyone else with who you might be sharing the tent.

In most cases, if you want a two man hiking tent, then you’re best to get one that says it sleeps 3 or 4 people.  But to be doubly sure – the best thing you can do is to check the dimensions of the tent rather than go by what the manufacturer says.

Of course, the more people your tent sleeps, the heavier and bulkier it will be.  So for a lightweight tent, it’s best to go for just the right size, rather than having too much additional space.

Weight

Given you’re going to have to carry this tent with you – possibly for days on end – the weight of the tent you purchase is a super important factor to consider.  Now, this is of course a balancing act with space.  The best ultralight backpacking tent usually has less internal space.  The more internal space, then usually the heavier and bulkier the tent is.

If you don’t mind carrying a bit of weight – or if there are two of you to share the load, then you might be happy to have a spacious tent that is a little heavier.  Just keep in mind that your tent will also come with things like poles, pegs and guy ropes, and of course, you’ll also be carrying your bedding and backpacks too.

These days though, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how lightweight some tents can be.  Usually the more spacious and ultralight the tent – the more pricey it is though.

Best hiking tents Australia

Freestanding or Non Freestanding Tents

If you’re after the best ultralight backpacking tents, then you’ll want to opt for a non freestanding tent that uses stakes and guylines for setting up.  Unfortunately, though these tents are much harder to set up, as they do away with tent poles which make the tent much easier to set up.

Single or Double Layered Tent

Some tents come with a single layer, while better quality ones come with a double layer- the inner tent and a rain fly.  The inner part of the tent acts as a barrier for any moisture and condensation that forms on the inside of the rain fly.

While a single layered tent is of course lighter and less bulky, to keep you well protected from whatever the Aussie weather throws at you while out hiking – it really is recommended to purchase a double layered tent.

Doors and Vestibules

While additional doors and vestibules add extra bulk and weight, they can also make your camping experience more comfortable and convenient.

One door is more than enough if you’re after the best 1 man hiking tent, but if you’re sharing with another person, you’ll find having two doors much more convenient – then each person has their own entry and exit point and so you’re not crawling all over one another to get in and out of the tent.

Also, a vestibule is great at providing a small covered area at the front of your tent to keep your gear, like hiking boots out of the elements. It also provides a covered area for you to cook your meals.

Weather Conditions

Tents are classed as 3 season or 4 season tents.  A 3 season tent means it’s suitable year round with the exception of super cold conditions – such as camping in the snow.  A 4 season tent simply means it’s suitable for year round camping – they’re also designed to withstand high winds and heavy snowfall.

In Australia, you’ll find that most tents are 3 season tents – because the chances are you’re not camping in the snow.  Even while camping during a cold winter, you’ll find that a 3 season tent will be more than enough to keep you warm.

Durability

Unlike traditional tents, hiking tents are made with thinner fabrics to ensure they are lighter.  This means they are more susceptible to rips and tears and so it’s super important that you take extra care with them.

However, if you’re prepared to invest in a good quality tent up front, you’ll be surprised at just how durable some ultralight hiking tents can be.  Just be extra careful as to where you set up your tent and be sure there are no sharp sticks or rocks lying about which could puncture the fabric.

Another good option is to bring a lightweight groundsheet along with you to help extend the life of your tent.

Price

Lastly – how much do you want to spend?  Are you just after a cheap hiking tent because this is a one off trip – or are you someone who wants to go on hiking/camping trips multiple times a year?

Like anything – you get what you pay for and if you’re trying to balance a top quality, durable tent, which is also spacious and lightweight – the more you’re willing the spend, the closer you’ll get to your dream hiking tent.
