What is a pop-up tent, and why should you get one?

So first things first, what is a pop tent? A pop-up tent (also referred to as an instant tent or easy-up tent) is the easiest tent to set up available on the Australian market.

These easy-to-put-up tents come with all the poles attached already, so all you have to do is put it in position, click the poles into place, and pull the rainfly over. With the easy-up tents Australia offers, you’ll have your tent set up in 1-2 minutes, sometimes even seconds!

These instant setup tents have become very popular as they’re just so easy to set up. The instant tents Australia has for sale are perfect for families with young kids, as you don’t have to worry about trying to entertain them while setting up the tent. No sooner have you got the tent out of the bag, and it’s up!

Pop-up tents for camping are generally lightweight, so they are easier to transport to your campsite. Plus, they are just as durable and weatherproof as most of the other tents available on the market.

Understanding the Tent Makeup

If you’re new to camping, you may not quite understand some of the different parts that make up a tent or its purpose. Understanding the different parts of a tent is essential to purchasing the best instant pop-up tent. So let’s look at a few of the most important components:

Rainfly

Tent without rainfly
Tent with rainfly

In most cases, an easy pop-up tent will come in two pieces: the main part of the tent, which is referred to as the inner tent, and then the rainfly. However, sometimes these two parts are integrated.

The rainfly is the floorless, waterproof outer layer that goes over the inner tent. The purpose of a rainfly is to prevent rain from getting inside the tent. Rainflies come in either full coverage (essential for high winds and heavy downpours) or partial coverage (ok for light showers).

While most good pop-up tents come with either a full or partial coverage rainfly, some don’t come with one at all (they can be purchased separately). So consider the sort of camping you’ll be doing and what is necessary for you.

Vestibule

tent vestibule
Tent Vestibule

Vestibules are the little front entrances or small rooms at the front of the popup tent, like a porch. Vestibules provide some extra space for you to leave items that you don’t want inside, like messy shoes. Some vestibules are so large that they provide a great covered spot for you to sit.

If you plan on adding a gazebo to your campsite setup, a large vestibule (or a vestibule at all) may not be necessary. We don’t tend to use the vestibule on our tent, as we do all our living under the gazebo.

Weather

Easy-up tents tend to come as 3-season or 4-season (also referred to as all-weather) tents. For the Australian climate, for the most part, a 3-season lightweight pop-up tent will do the trick, as these tents are suited to camping in most kinds of weather.

If you intend to camp in the snow, you will need a 4-season instant pop-up camping tent.

Material

The best quick setup tents Australia has tend to come in nylon/polyester, which is lightweight and great at keeping you dry but does tend to heat up rather fast in the sun.

How to Choose the Best Instant Up Tents Australia

Ok, so you’re convinced that an easy pop-up camping tent is the way to go. However, before rushing out and buying the first quick pop-up tent you find, I urge you to take some time to consider what you really need from your tent.

To ensure you purchase the best quality pop-up tent for you, consider the following factors.

Tent size: How many people does a tent sleep?

First things first, just because a tent says it’s the best 4-person pop-up tent doesn’t mean it will comfortably accommodate 4 people. The number specified on the tent describes how many people can sleep side by side in sleeping bags (not on a comfortable air mattress), without any room left over for any personal belongings – as you can see in the image above.

So the best 4-man pop-up tent literally means 4 people sleep side by side, with no extra room in between. In reality, it is probably better suited to 2 or 3 people in comfort! For example, we have both a four-person pop-up tent and a six-person pop-up tent, with the six-person being a little more comfortable for the three of us – particularly now that our daughter is getting much bigger.

To ensure you have the best pop-up camping tent that accommodates your family or group of friends comfortably, I recommend you look for a tent that says it’s for at least two additional people than you require. Even double the number if you want more space. Of course, if you or anyone in your group is particularly large, you’re going to want to go for at least double, maybe even more.

So, for example, the best pop-up tent for 4 people would be a 6-person pop-up tent or even an 8-person pop-up tent. This will provide you with plenty of room for bedding as well as some space for your personal belongings.

Unfortunately, there is no standard sizing between any of the easy pop-up tents for sale, as they come in all shapes, sizes, and designs. Use the following information as a basic guide:

  • 2-Person Tent: Suitable for 1 or 2 people with limited space for belongings. Average sizing is between 2-3 m in length, 1-1.5 m in width, and 1-1.5 m in height.
  • 4-Person Tent: Suitable for 2-3 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 2.4 and 3.5 m in length, 2-2.4 m in width, and 1.2-1.9 m in height.
  • 6-Person Tent: Suitable for 3-4 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 3 and 3.5 m in length, 2.5 and 3 m in width, and 1.7 and 1.9 m in height.
  • 8-Person Tent: Suitable for 4-6 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 4.2 and 4.7 m in length, 2.4 and 3 m in width, and 1.8-2.1 m in height.
  • 10-Person Tent: Suitable for 5-8 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 4.2 and 6 m in length, 2.7 and 3.5 m in width, and 1.9 and 2.1 m in height.

What type of pop-up tent to use for camping

The type of camping you’re likely to be doing with your tent is extremely important when considering what the best camping pop-up tent is for you.

If you need to walk a long distance with your camping gear, like to a secluded camping spot, or if you need a tent for overnight hiking excursions, then having a super small, compact pop tent is essential.

While on the other hand, if you plan on staying put for a week or so, you probably want a comfortable, homely setup, in which case a large pop-up camping tent may be a better fit.

How often will you use your pop-up tent to go camping?

How often you go camping is also another vital factor to consider when deciding which is the best pop-up tent Australia has to purchase.

If you think you might go camping once a year with other experienced campers, then you can probably get away with the best cheap pop-up tent that does the job but doesn’t have any extras that increase the price.

However, if you love camping and plan to go regularly, it would be worth investing in one of the top-rated pop-up tents that will last for years.

Other Things to Consider:

  • Height: Some quick-erect tents Australia has are really low to the ground, and you’ll need to crouch while inside. Other quick tents Australia has have high ceilings, which means you can stand up and get dressed. Crouching down in a tent can be really frustrating, and I prefer to stand up, so consider this if this will also be an issue for you.
  • Poles: For maximum durability, look for a heavy-duty pop-up tent with poles made from aluminium, as they are stronger than fibreglass poles.
  • Materials: For the best instant tent Australia has in durability, look for tents with a higher denier fabric. Also, ensure they have reinforced seams and high denier fabric on the floor to avoid moisture coming in.
  • Windows and Doors: Some people prefer multiple doors; I think one is fine unless you purchase a tent for a large group of people. What is more important when it comes to the best instant up tent Australia has is that there are plenty of windows with mesh panels to allow for good ventilation.
  • Interior Loops and Storage: The best-rated pop-up tents have loops from the ceiling so you can attach a light and built-in inside pockets so you can store your valuables. You might also want to look for a quick setup tent with a power cord outlet so you can easily bring power inside your tent.

Oztrail Pop Up Tent—Fast Frame Tent Review

Specifications:

  • Sleeps: Comes in a 4, 6, or 10 man option
  • Height: 195 cm
  • Floor Material: Heavy duty dry floor
  • Tent Material: 150 denier polyester
  • Poles: 16/20 mm steel

If you’re looking for an alternative to Coleman tents, Oztrail also makes a great range of quick pop-up tents. The Oztrail Fast Frame series of tents comes in a 4, 6, or 10-man pop-up tent and is very similar to the Coleman Silver Series tents (comparable price too).

Like the previous Coleman tents, the Oztrail Fast Frame tents are really easy to set up. Simply peg out the four corners, extend the poles, and up goes the tent. You’ll then just need to put on the rainfly and peg it all down—it’s that easy.

The inner tent and rainfly are made from a durable 150-denier ripstop polyester fabric with built-in sun protection. The sun protection coating not only protects the OZtrail instant tent from the harsh sun rays but also acts as your waterproof barrier, with the tent rated at 1500mm. The factory heat-taped seams also ensure no moisture gets inside the tent, as does the heavy-duty bucket-style floor with elevated seams.

The Fast Frame series of tents features a heavy-gauge steel frame pole system with non-corrosive plastic hubs.

Some other features of these tents include the large front door, plenty of windows for good ventilation, a great-sized front awning, internal storage pockets, and a lantern loop.

As you can see, these are very similar to the Coleman tents, although comparing the Oztrail Fast Frame vs Coleman Instant Up tent, the OZtrail tents are 5 cm taller than the previous Coleman tents, so you get a little extra standing space.

In terms of the OZtrail vs. Coleman tent, there’s really not much of a difference, and it just comes down to personal choice. However, if you’re looking for a good, inexpensive alternative to the Coleman pop-up tents, the entry-level OZtrail Fast Frame series is a great option to consider.

Oztrail Fast Frame Lumos Tent Review

Specifications:

  • Sleeps: Comes in a 6, 10, or 12 man option
  • Height: 195 cm
  • Floor Material: 210 denier polyoxford floor
  • Tent Material: 150 denier ripstop polyester
  • Poles: 16/20 mm steel

If you’re looking for the absolute best quality pop tent money can buy, I suggest you consider the Oztrail Lumos tent series. These quick setup tents are like the Rolls Royce of pop-up tents, offering additional floor space, extra height, and an overall lighter tent—but, of course, they cost quite a lot more than all the other instant pop-up tents reviewed in this guide.

Like the previous Oztrail Fast Frame series, the Lumos tents are super easy to erect.

This high-quality, easy-setup tent is made from a 150-denier ripstop polyester, which has a sun protection coating. The factory heat-taped seams also ensure no moisture gets inside the tent, as does the heavy-duty bucket-style floor with elevated seams. It also has a huge waterproof rating of 300mm. The frame is made from a heavy-gauge 16/20mm steel frame pole system with non-corrosive plastic hubs.

One of my favourite things about the Lumos tents is the integrated LED lighting system. This is a built-in lighting system throughout the tent, so you’ll never be fumbling around in the dark. The lights have three modes – high, low, and then a night light, which is ideal for the kids. The lights are controlled by a panel, of which there are two – one on the outside of the tent and one on the inside.

These easy-up tents for camping also feature blackout technology, so you won’t have the kids waking up at first light. Not only does this blackout feature avoid the sunlight penetrating inside the tent, but it also helps keep the tent cool – so you can sleep in longer and get the kids to bed earlier.

Other great features of these good pop-up tents include multiple awnings for shelter, loads of ventilation throughout, including huge windows with insect mesh for maximum air circulation, heavy-duty PVC flooring, built-in storage pockets, and power cord access.

The Fast Frame Lumos series of tents is the perfect tent for the large family or group wanting a tent with all the bells and whistles. It comes in a 6-, 10-, or 12-man tent option.

  • Height: 193 cm
  • Floor Material: PE welded floor
  • Tent Material: 150 polyoxford
  • Poles: 16/20 mm steel

Yet another excellent pop-up tent option from Coleman – this time, the Coleman Connectable Series. This series of easy-erect tents comes in the option of a 3- or 6-person tent, making it perfect for those after family-size pop-up tents or those just wanting a small, easy-up tent.

These tents have a unique hexagon shape, which is what makes these tents so different. The beauty of these tents is they can be used alone, or you can purchase multiple tents and attach them together so they’ll accommodate any size group. You could even purchase two smaller tents and have separate rooms for the parents and kids, or even more, and each of the kids have their own space – the choice is yours!

Just like you’d expect from Coleman, these tents feature the integrated hub system, which has all the poles pre-attached, so the tent goes up in minutes. Once erected, pop on the rainfly and secure it all to the ground with the included tent pegs and guy ropes.

Oztent Touring Tent Review

Specifications:

  • Sleeps: Comes in a 3, 4 or 5 man option
  • Height: 190 cm
  • Floor Material: Heated sealed PVC floor
  • Tent Material: Ripstop polycotton canvas
  • Poles: Aluminium

A super popular pop-up tent option among our Queensland Camping FB community is the OZtent RV series. These tents come in the option of a 3, 4, or 5-person pop-up tent, so there is sure to be a suitable option no matter how many people are in your group or how much space you like in your tent.

They are bigger and heavier than most pop-up tents, and they pack down quite long, so they are ideal for storing on roof racks when in transit. One of the reasons it’s heavier than most other tents in this guide is that it’s a canvas tent. The canvas is an 8-ounce ripstop polyester that is durable and waterproof, and the tent also comes with a heavy-duty PVC heat-welded floor.

Despite being a little on the heavy side, it’s still quick and easy to set up, thanks to its instant-folding aluminium frame.

This automatic pop-up tent features an extra-large awning, perfect for those road trips where you don’t want to bring along a gazebo. There is plenty of room under the awning for a couple of chairs and a table, and it has a sewn-in stiffener to make it easy for one person to roll up.

Other great features of this automatic pop-up camping tent include huge windows with super fine mesh for insect protection, internal storage pockets, a zippered power outlet, and plenty of vents for air circulation.

These certainly are excellent heavy-duty tents that will keep you and your camping crew well protected. However, they are extremely expensive, and for me, considering the money, I’d still prefer a Coleman or OZtrail instant-up tent. Nevertheless, this is an excellent quality tent and well deserving of its place in these reviews.

Darche Kozi Series 6P Instant Tent Review

Darche Kozi 6 Person Instant Tent

Specifications:

  • Sleeps: Comes in a 6 man
  • Height: 200 cm
  • Floor Material: Polyethylene 125 gsm
  • Tent Material: 75 denier polyester
  • Poles: Powder Coated Steel

For those tall campers wanting a quality pop-up tent that can be expanded, the Darche Kozi Series 6P Instant Tent is worth a look. It’s a top-quality tent, made with sturdy and durable materials, well suited to those regular campers wanting a tent built to last.

This is a light pop-up tent for its size, and it really is a dream to put up. The frame is made with 19mm steel powder-coated poles to ensure they are durable and long-lasting. It also has a quality fly made from 75 denier polyester with a PU coating that delivers a 2000mm waterproof rating.

The inner tent also features a heavy-duty floor, made with Polyethylene 125 gsm.

In terms of features, these instant-up tents for camping have it all. There are huge windows with insect mesh for excellent ventilation, internal storage pockets, a hook to hang a light from, and a power cord outlet.

A personal favourite of mine is the large front awning. The awning can be enclosed on all 3 sides or can be left open simply by unzipping sections as you wish. The awning offers a good area for storage or eating. The back of the tent has another door with a smaller awning.

Another feature of this tent is that it can be combined with another Darche Kozi tent. These tents are in the moderate to affordable range and make a great small family tent.

Explore Planet Earth Speedy Tent

Specifications

  • Sleeps: Comes in a 2- or 3 man option
  • Height: 105 cm
  • Floor Material: 210 denier polyester
  • Tent Material: 40 denier polyester
  • Poles: Aluminium

The Speedy Tent series from Explore Planet Earth erects itself in seconds. Coming in either a 2- or 3-berth pop-up tent, the Speedy tent is small and super lightweight, so it is perfect for anyone after a compact tent to throw in the back of the car.

The Speedy series of tents is an all-in-one pop-up tent, which pretty much puts itself up as soon as you take it out of the bag. You’ll just need to peg it down to prevent it from flying away. The easy-up camping tent is dually layered and made from a durable 68 denier polyester fabric with fully taped seams to prevent moisture from entering.

The Speedy is a spacious and lightweight tent at just 3.5 kg. However, it only has a height of 105 cm, which is the shortest tent out of all the tents in this review. Therefore, don’t expect a lot of headspace in the Speedy tent.

However, despite being a small tent, the Speedy tent comes with a top-quality aluminium pole system. This means the Speedy is a durable tent and will last a lot longer.

I just love the Speedy series of tents because of the built-in LED lights in the ceiling—you just need to charge them up with a USB charger. Other great features of the Speedy tents are the side windows for ventilation, reflective guide ropes, and a built-in accessory pocket.

The Speedy Series of tents is one of the more expensive small-sized tents in these reviews. However, if you’re after good-quality pop-up tents, this is certainly one to consider.

Darche Urban Safari Tent Review

Specifications:

  • Height: 210 cm
  • Floor Material: 320 gsm heavy duty bucket floor
  • Tent Material: 260 gsm ripstop polyester canvas

This is such a roomy tent – suitable for 4 to 6 people and with a great height of 210cm.

Just like all the tents in this guide, this Darche tent is super easy to put up. It has an integrated hub design, where all the poles are pre-attached and lock into place.

It is a little heavier and bulkier than, say, your OZtrail and Coleman instant-up tents due to the tent being made from high-quality ripstop canvas. It is a 260gsm polycotton canvas with a waterproof rating of 2000mm, so it will keep you well protected from the elements. It also features a heavy duty 320 gsm PVC bucket floor to prevent any moisture or water from getting in.

Just like the Wanderer Extreme and OZtent RV, this tent comes with a spacious awning, so you’ve got plenty of space for relaxing outdoors. If you want extra protection, you can even purchase additional awning walls; this could give you additional sleeping space if required. The awning is also completely removable if not required.

The tent has oversized windows for excellent ventilation and other ventilation ports for maximum air circulation. Other great features include a pocket, a zippered powder cord inlet, internal storage pockets, and a heavy-duty carry bag to pack everything away.

If you like the idea of these heavy-duty canvas tents yet don’t want to pay a small fortune for the OZtent RV, this Darche tent is an excellent alternative. It comes with excellent features but at a fraction of the price – so well worth considering.

You can get this pop-up tent as a Coleman 1-man pop-up tent or 3-man option; both are made from breathable polyester and come with the added protection of a 150 denier polyester fly that has an impressive 1500mm water head rating to minimise any chance of leaking.

The floor is durable too, thanks to Coleman’s heavy-duty, welded polyethylene flooring. This tent is smaller in size than most in this review but still manages large windows and a large D-shaped door to allow for great ventilation in warmer conditions. The fine mesh installed on the windows is great at keeping insects out. These tents also have an awning that is set up using additional poles and allows for an extra shaded area or just somewhere to store gear.

Setup is quick and easy and can be done in less than 5 minutes (including the pegs) once you’ve familiarised yourself with how everything goes. Other features include a power access point, a hook for hanging a light, and storage pockets to keep loose items. This particular tent has Darkroom technology, which, if you read previous reviews, filters out up to 95% of sunlight and reduces heat by up to 5 degrees.

All in all, the Coleman Excursion range is a lightweight, easy-to-set-up tent from a trusted brand, and it comes at a great price point. It is ideal for a couple or an additional tent for the kids.
