What is a Pop Up Tent and Why Should You Get One?
So first things first, what is a pop tent? A pop-up tent (also referred to as an instant tent or easy up tent) is the easiest tent to set up available on the Australian market.
These easy to put up tents come with all the poles attached already, so all you have to do is put it in position, click the poles into place and pull the rainfly over. With the easy up tents Australia offers, you’ll have your tent set up in 1-2 minutes, sometimes even seconds!
These instant set up tents have become very popular as they’re just so easy to set up. The instant tents Australia has for sale are perfect for families with young kids as you don’t have to worry about trying to entertain them while setting up the tent. No sooner have you got the tent out of the bag and it’s up!
Pop up tents for camping are generally lightweight, so they are easier to transport to your camping site. Plus, they are just as durable and weatherproof as most of the other tents available on the market.
Understanding the Tent Make Up
If you’re new to camping, you may not quite understand some of the different parts that make up a tent or its purpose. Understanding the different parts of a tent is essential to purchasing the best instant pop up tent. So let’s look at a few of the most important components:
In most cases, an easy pop up tent will come in two pieces: the main part of the tent, which is referred to as the inner tent, and then the rainfly. However, sometimes these two parts are integrated.
The rainfly is the floorless, waterproof outer layer that goes over the inner tent. The purpose of a rainfly is to prevent rain from getting inside the tent. Rainflys come in either full coverage (essential for high winds and heavy downpours) or partial coverage (ok for light showers).
While most good pop up tents come with either a full or partial coverage rainfly, some don’t come with one at all (they can be purchased separately). So consider the sort of camping you’ll be doing and what is necessary for you.
Vestibules are the little front entrances or small rooms at the front of the popup tent, like a porch. Vestibules provide some extra space for you to leave items that you don’t want inside, making a mess of your tent like shoes. Some vestibules are so large that they provide a great covered spot for you to sit.
If you plan on adding a gazebo to your campsite up, a large vestibule (or a vestibule at all) may not be necessary. We don’t tend to use the vestibule on our tent as we do all our living under the gazebo.
Easy up tents tend to come as 3 season or 4 season (also referred to as all-weather) tents. For the Australian climate, for the most part, a 3-season lightweight pop up tent will do the trick as these tents are suited to camping in most kinds of weather.
If you intend to camp in the snow, you will need a 4-season instant pop up camping tent.
The best quick set up tents Australia has tends to come in nylon/polyester, which is lightweight and great at keeping you dry but do tend to heat up rather fast in the sun.
How to Choose the Best Instant Up Tents Australia has
Ok, so you’re convinced that an easy pop up camping tent is the way to go. However, before rushing out and buying the first quick pop up tent you find, I urge you to take some time to consider what you really need from your tent.
To ensure you purchase the best quality pop up tent for you, consider the following factors.
How Many People?
First things first, just because a tent says it’s the best 4 person pop up tent doesn’t mean it will comfortably accommodate 4 people. The number specified on the tent describes how many people can sleep side by side in sleeping bags (not on a comfortable air mattress), without any room left over for any personal belongings – as you can see in the image above.
So the best 4 man pop up tent literally means 4 people sleep side by side, with no extra room in between. In reality, it is probably better suited to 2 or 3 people in comfort! For example, we have both a four person pop up tent and a 6 person pop up tent, with the 6 person being a little more comfortable for the 3 of us – particularly now our daughter is getting much bigger.
To ensure you have the best pop up camping tent that accommodates your family or group of friends comfortably, I recommend you look for a tent that says it’s for at least an additional two people than you require. Even double the number if you want more space. Of course, if you or anyone in your group is particularly large, you’re going to want to go for at least double, maybe even more.
So, for example, the best pop up tent for 4 people would be a 6 man pop up tent, or even an 8 person pop up tent. This will provide you with plenty of room for bedding as well as some space for your personal belongings.
Unfortunately, there is no standard sizing between any of the easy pop up tents for sale, as they come in all shapes, sizes and designs. Use the following information as a basic guide:
- 2 Person Tent: Suitable for 1 or 2 people with limited space for belongings. Average sizing is between 2-3 m in length, 1-1.5 m in width and 1-1.5 m in height.
- 4 Person Tent: Suitable for 2-3 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 2.4-3.5 m in length, 2-2.4 m in width and 1.2-1.9 m in height.
- 6 Person Tent: Suitable for 3-4 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 3-3.5 m in length, 2.5-3 m in width and 1.7-1.9 m in height.
- 8 Person Tent: Suitable for 4-6 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 4.2-4.7 m in length, 2.4-3 m in width and 1.8-2.1 m in height.
- 10 Person Tent: Suitable for 5-8 people with a small area for belongings and to move around. Average sizing is between 4.2- 6 m in length, 2.7-3.5 m in width and 1.9-2.1 m in height.
Type of Camping
The type of camping you’re likely to be doing with your tent is extremely important when considering what the best camping pop up tent is for you.
If you need to walk a long distance with your camping gear, like a secluded camping spot, or if you need a tent for overnight hiking excursions, then having a super small compact pop tent is essential.
While on the other hand, if you plan on staying put for a week or so, you probably want a comfortable homely setup, in which case a large pop up camping tent may be a better fit.
How often will you go camping?
How often you go camping is also another vital factor to consider when deciding which is the best tent Australia has to purchase.
If you think you might go camping once a year with other experienced campers, then you can probably get away with the best cheap pop up tent that does the job but doesn’t have any extras that increase the price.
However, if you love camping and plan to go regularly, it would be worth investing in one of the top rated pop up tents that will last for years.
Other Things to Consider:
- Height: Some quick erect tents Australia has are really low to the ground, and you’ll need to crouch while inside. Other quick tents Australia has have high ceilings, which means you can stand up and get dressed. Crouching down in a tent can be really frustrating, and I prefer to stand up, so consider this if this will also be an issue for you.
- Poles: For maximum durability, look for a heavy duty pop up tent with poles made from aluminium as they are stronger than fibreglass poles.
- Materials: For the best instant tent Australia has in durability, look for tents with a higher denier fabric. Also, ensure they have reinforced seams and high denier fabric on the floor to avoid moisture coming in.
- Windows and Doors: Some people prefer multiple doors; I think the one is fine unless you purchase a tent for a large group of people. What is more important when it comes to the best instant up tent Australia has, is that there are plenty of windows with mesh panels to allow for good ventilation.
- Interior Loops and Storage: The best rated pop up tents have loops from the ceiling so you can attach a light and built inside pockets so you can store your valuables. You might also want to look for a quick setup tent with an power cord outlet, so you can easily bring power inside your tent.
Best Pop Up Tent Review Australia 2021
Hopefully, after reading the above, you have a better understanding of what you need for your instant pop up camping tent to meet your needs. Below I’ve provided a detailed review of the top 10 pop up tents currently available in Australia.
I can’t recommend Coleman pop up tents enough – they really are among the best camping tents Australia has on the market. We love them so much, in fact, that we have two! We have the Silver Series Coleman instant up tent in a 4 man and the Coleman Gold Series in a 6 man – both have been updated now with newer models but we still love them! So the Silver Series has now been upgraded to the Coleman Silver Series Evo tent which is an excellent family tent.
The Coleman Silver Series Evo tent is a great quality, durable and affordable easy tent to put up. This is among the quickest tent to set up Australia has and come in either a 4 man (pictured above) or 6 man pop up tent, so they are perfect for a young family or group of friends. As I said, we have both the 4 and 6 man sizes, which are ideal for our family of 3. I wouldn’t try and get any more than 3 people in either tent though.
These best instant up tents go up in literally under 2 minutes. Plus, they are just as quick to pack away. Everything (except the rainfly) is integrated, so you only need to pull it out of the bag, open it up and then pull it into position. To be honest, the longest part with this self erecting tent is knocking in the pegs and putting on the fly.
The Silver Series Evo tent features the Coleman WeatherTec System, which basically means these popup tents can withstand rigorous high wind conditions. This best quick tent Australia has is made from heavy duty fabric and features a bucket Polyethylene floor with inverted seams to keep water out. In addition, the tent comes with a full size rainfly which has fully taped seams with a large front awning and attaches easily to the body with the velcro frame attachments.
This Coleman quick set up tent offers plenty of ventilation, with its multiple large windows, which feature roll up flaps. Other features of this Coleman instant tent include internal cord management for lantern hanging and a small front awning.
If you’re after the best 4 person tent Australia has or the best 6 person tent Australia has – these Coleman tents are definitely one to consider. We are super happy with our Coleman Silver Series instant up tent and highly recommend it to others. When it comes to easy to erect tents, Australia has – they are definitely among the best.
If you love the look of the Coleam Silver Series Evo but want with all the bells and whistles, then you’re going to want to check out the Northstar Series tent. The Coleman Northstar tents come in either a 4 man, 6 man, 8 man or 10 man tent – perfect if you’re after the best large pop up tent. This particular model comes with everything you need for a comfortable camping trip including an integrated LED light system and Dark Room technology to reduce light and heat inside your tent.
Like all Coleman tents, the best part of the Northstar easy tent is just how simple it is to set up. It has pre-attached poles that make setting up camp as simple as unfolding, extending, and securing by clicking and locking the poles into place. You will have this tent up in around 3 minutes, so you can get on with enjoying your camping experience. It is a high quality tent made with a 185 denier ripstock polyester with a waterproof rating of 3000mm. It also features a heavy duty 420 denier polyester bucket flooring.
With the Northstar tent, putting the little ones to bed is easy as you won’t be fumbling around for a light with the integrated LED light system. Plus the kids will hopefully sleep in a little bit longer, as thanks to the Dark Room technology, you won’t be getting any sunlight blaring into your tent at the crack of dawn. This also helps putting little ones to bed when it’s still light outside, as the tent is basically pitch black inside which also helps to keep your tent around 5 degrees cooler.
This tent comes in a range of sizes so no matter how many are in your family or how much space you like to have. There is a 4 person, 6 person, 8 person or even a huge 10 person tent. The 10 person tent comes with three separate bedrooms and the 8 person tent has two separate rooms, each with its own private entry. All the tents have a great height of 190cm.
Other great features of this family pop up tent include a small front awning, huge windows and doors with insect mesh for heaps of ventilation, additional ventilation points along the sides of the tent, multiple internal storage pockets,
With all the features of the Northstar series of tents, they are among the heaviest tents. However, this Coleman family tent is hands down nothing short of remarkable. If you are a small family of three or with young kids and want to spend more time in the great outdoors than putting up your tent, the Coleman 4 man pop up tent is an excellent choice for you. If you’re a larger family or have older kids, definitely consider one of the bigger sizes.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Coleman tents, Oztrail also makes a great range of quick pop up tents. The Oztrail Fast Frame series of tents come in a 4, 6 or 10 man pop up tent and are very similar to the Coleman Silver Series tents (comparable price too).
Like the previous Coleman tents, the Oztrail Fast Frame tents are really easy to set up. Simply peg out the four corners, extent the poles and up goes the tent. You’ll then just need to put on the rainfly and peg it all down – it’s that easy.
The inner tent and rainfly are made from a durable 150 denier ripstop polyester fabric with built in sun protection. The sun protection coating not only protects the OZtrail instant tent from the harsh sun rays but also acts as your waterproof barrier, with the tent rated at 1500mm. The factory heat taped seams also ensure no moisture gets inside the tent, as does the heavy duty bucket style floor with elevated seams.
The Fast Frame series of tents features a heavy gauge steel frame pole system with non corrosive plastic hubs. Some features of these tents include the large front door, plenty of windows for good ventilation, great size front awning, internal storage pockets and lantern loop. As you can see, these are very similar to the Coleman tents, although comparing the Oztrail Fast Frame vs Coleman Instant Up tent, the OZtrail tents are 5 cm taller than the previous Coleman tents, so you get a little extra standing space.
In terms of the OZtrail vs Coleman tent, there’s really not much of a difference and it just comes down to personal choice. However, if you’re looking for a good inexpensive alternative to the Coleman pop up tents, the entry level OZtrail Fast Frame series is a great option to consider.
If you’re looking for the absolute best quality pop tent money can buy, I suggest you consider the Oztrail Lumos tent series. These quick setup tents are like the Royal Royce in pop up tents, offering additional floor space, extra height and an overall lighter tent – but of course, quite a lot more money than all the other instant pop up tents reviewed in this guide.
Like the previous Oztrail Fast Frame series, the Lumos tents are super easy to erect. This high quality easy set up tent is made from a 150 denier ripstop polyester which has s sun protection coating. The factory heat taped seams also ensure no moisture gets inside the tent, as does the heavy duty bucket style floor with elevated seams. It also has a huge waterproof rating of 300mm. The frame is made from a heavy gauge 16/20mm steel frame pole system with non corrosive plastic hubs.
One of my favourite things about the Lumos tents is the integrated LED lighting system. This is a built in lighting system throughout the tent, so you’ll never be fumbling around in the dark. The lights have three modes – high, low and then a night light which is ideal for the kids. The lights are controlled by a panel of which there are two – one on the outside of the tent and one on the inside.
These easy up tents for camping also feature block out technology, so you won’t have the kids waking up at first light. Not only does this block out feature avoid the sunlight penetrating inside the tent, but it also helps keep the tent cool – so you can sleep in longer and get the kids to bed earlier.
Other great features of these good pop up tents include multiple awnings for shelter, loads of ventilation throughout, including huge windows with insect mesh for maximum air circulation, heavy duty PVC flooring, built in storage pockets, and power cord access.
The Fast Frame Lumos series of tents is the perfect tent for the large family or group wanting a tent with all the bells and whistles. It comes in a 6, 10 or 12 man tent option.
Yet another excellent pop up tent option from Coleman – this time the Coleman Connectable Series. This series of easy erect tents come in the option of a 3 or 6 person tent, making it perfect for those after family size pop up tents or those just wanting a small easy up tent.
These tents have a unique hexagon shape which is what makes these tents so different. The beauty of these tents is they can be used alone, or you can purchase multiple tents and attach them together so they’ll accommodate any size group. You could even purchase two smaller tents and have separate rooms for the parents and kids, or even more and each of the kids have their own space – the choice is yours!
Just like you’d expect from Coleman, these tents feature the integrated hub system, which has all the poles pre attached, so the tent goes up in minutes. Once erected, pop on the rainfly and secure it all to the ground with the included tent pegs and guy ropes.
This is a top quality tent (with a price to match) made with a 150 denier poly oxford fabric, with a 1500mm waterproof rating. The floor of this best waterproof pop up tent is heavy duty with welded floors and inverted seams to prevent water from seeping in and the frame is made from durable steel.
Other features of the Coleman Connectable Series of tents include a small awning for shelter from the sun or rain, large windows for excellent ventilation and a power access point to keep your devices charged.
Whether you’re after the best small pop up tent for yourself or a set up that suits families with children who want their own privacy, this range of Coleman Connectable tents is a good option to consider.
A super popular tent option among our Queensland Camping FB community is the OZtent RV series. These tents come in the option of a 3, 4 or 5 person tent – so there is sure to be a suitable option no matter how many people in your group or how much space you like in your tent.
They are bigger and heavier than most pop up tents and they pack down quite long, so they are ideal for storing on roof racks when in transit. One of the reasons it’s heavier than most other tents in this guide is that it’s a canvas tent. The canvas is an 8 ounce ripstop polyester that is durable and waterproof and the tent also comes with a heavy duty PVC heat welded floor. Despite being a little on the heavy side, it’s still quick and easy to set up, thanks to its instant folding aluminium frame.
This automatic pop up tent features an extra large awning, perfect for those road trips where you don’t want to bring along a gazebo. There is plenty of room under the awning for a couple of chairs and a table and it has a sewn in stiffener to make it easy for a one person roll up. Other great features of this automatic pop up camping tent include huge windows with super fine mesh for insect protection, internal storage pockets, a zippered power outlet and plenty of vents for air circulation.
These certainly are excellent heavy duty tents that will keep you and your camping crew well protected. However, they are extremely expensive, and for me, considering the money, I’d still prefer a Coleman or OZtrail instant up tent. Nevertheless, this is an excellent quality tent and well deserving of its place in these reviews.
For those tall campers wanting plenty of headspace in their tent, the Wanderer Extreme is worth a look with a height of 210 cm – one of the tallest tents in this guide. It’s a top quality tent, made with sturdy and durable materials so well suited to those regular campers wanting a tent built to last.
This is a heavy tent, so be sure you’ve got the space and weight allowance to transport this one. But just like the previous OZtent – despite being heavy, thanks to its instant up central hub, it really is a dream to put up. This is a heavy duty frame made with 25mm aluminium poles to ensure they are durable and long lasting. It also has a quality fly made from 210 denier ripstop polyester with a silver coating and a huge 5000mm waterproof rating – so you know this tent is well and truly going to protect you no matter what mother nature throws at you.
The inner tent is made from a heavy duty polycotton 230gsm canvas, so you’ll have no doubt that this tent is going to last you for years and years. The inner tent also features a heavy duty floor which is made with 550gsm reinforced PVC.
In terms of features, these instant up tents for camping have it all. There are huge windows with insect mesh for excellent ventilation, a large front awning that offers plenty of shelter, internal storage pockets and a power cord outlet.
Just like the OZtent RV tents, these are not cheap tents! However, if you’re after something super durable and long lasting, the Wanderer Extreme HD tents are another option worth considering.
The Speedy Tent series from Explore Planet Earth erects itself in seconds. Coming in either a 2 or 3 berth pop up tent, the Speedy tent is small and super lightweight, so it is perfect for anyone after a compact tent to throw in the back of the car.
The Speedy series of tents are an all in one tent, which pretty much puts itself up as soon as you take it out of the bag. You’ll just need to peg it down to prevent it from flying away. The easy up camping tent is dually layered made from a durable 68 denier polyester fabric with fully taped seams to prevent moisture from entering.
The Speedy is a spacious and lightweight tent at just 3.5kg. However, it only has a height of 105cm, which is the shortest tent out of all the tents in this review. Therefore, don’t expect a lot of headspace in the Speedy tent.
However, despite being a small tent, the Speedy tent comes with a top quality aluminium pole system. This means the Speedy is a durable tent and will last a lot longer.
I just love the Speedy series of tents because of the built-in LED lights in the ceiling – you just need to charge them up with a USB charger. Other great features of the Speedy tents are the side windows for ventilation, reflective guide ropes and a built in accessory pocket.
The Speedy Series of tents is one of the more expensive small sized tents in these reviews. However, if you’re after good quality pop up tents, this is certainly one to consider.
If you like the idea of heavy duty canvas tents like the Wanderer Extreme and OZtent RV, but want another option to consider, then have a look at the Darche Safari – another giant camping brand with an excellent reputation for making top quality products. This is such a roomy tent – suitable for 4 to 6 people and with a great height of 210cm.
Just like all the tents in this guide, this Darche tent is super easy to put up. It has an integrated hub design, where all the poles are pre attached and lock into place. It is a little heavier and bulkier than, say your OZtrail and Coleman instant up tents due to the tent being made from high quality ripstock canvas. It is a 260gsm polycotton canvas with a waterproof rating of 2000mm, so it will keep you well protected from the elements. It also features a heavy duty 320gsm PVC bucket floor to prevent any moisture or water from getting in.
Just like the Wanderer Extreme and OZtent RV, this tent comes with a spacious awning, so you’ve got plenty of space for relaxing outdoors. If you want extra protection, you can even purchase additional awning walls; this could give you additional sleeping space if required. The awning is also completely removable if not required.
The tent has oversized windows for excellent ventilation and other ventilation ports for maximum air circulation. Other great features include a pocket zippered powder cord inlet, internal storage pockets and a heavy duty carry bag to pack everything away.
If you like the idea of these heavy duty canvas tents yet don’t want to pay a small fortune for the OZtent RV or Wanderer Extreme, this Darche tent is an excellent alternative. It comes with excellent features but a fraction of the price – so well worth considering.
Last but not least, in our reviews of the best quick pop camping tents currently on the Australian market is the Wanderer Kalbarri tent range. Coming in a 4, 8 or 12 man tent, these are another excellent option to consider for anyone after a tent that goes up fast.
This quality tent is made with a hammertone coated steel frame with fibreglass and steel poles. The rainfly is made from a 205T polyester with a huge 3000mm waterproof rating, so you’ll be well protected during a downpour. You’ve also got a 300 denier heavy duty floor.
Inside the tent, there are large windows with insect mesh for excellent ventilation. These windows are even accessible from the inside, so you can easily make adjustments during the night without going outside. Outside there is a great size awning for everyone to relax under. Other great features of the Wanderer Kalbarri tents include generous size D doors, internal storage pockets, power cord outlets and an expandable carry pack for storage.
The Wanderer Kalbarri Tents are top quality, compact, reasonably lightweight and perfect for those wanting a quick camp set up.
And there you have it, our ultimate guide to the best pop up tents in Australia. Honestly, once you have a pop up tent, you’ll never go back! We have plenty of other guides to help you get started, including choosing an air mattress, choosing a swag, choosing a car awning, and even having the ultimate camping checklist here.
