Review of Tall Timbers – Ravenshoe Caravan Park

If you’re on the road in North Queensland, looking for a place to stay for the night, then we can highly recommend the Tall Timbers Motel and Van Park.  This Ravenshoe Caravan Park is a lovely 5 hectares property, hugged by a freshwater stream and offers travellers both spacious campsites and affordable motel rooms.  They are also pet friendly.

We stumbled upon this Ravenshoe accommodation while travelling from Cape York down to Charters Towers.  We didn’t know the area or have any idea on where to stay but came across the property on Wiki Camps and thanks to its excellent reviews, decided to spend the night.  The staff were very welcoming on our arrival and we were blown away by just how gorgeous the property was.  We couldn’t believe we only had a night at this lovely spot.

If you’re heading up to North Queensland and looking for a base for the night – we recommend considering Tall Timbers.  You can find out everything you need to know about staying here in this guide and you can also check out our YouTube video here, showing the highlights of this caravan park Ravenshoe offers.

Where is the Tall Timbers Ravenshoe Caravan Park?

The Tall Timbers Motel and Van Park is located in Ravenshoe in the Atherton Tableland Region.  At 920 metres, this is the highest town in Queensland and is surrounded by beautiful lush countryside and World Heritage rainforest.  Ravenshoe is some 117km southwest of Cairns and an hour’s drive west of Innisfail.

The caravan park is situated just outside the small town centre of Ravenshoe, along the Kennedy Highway.  In Ravenshoe you’ll find a small supermarket, bakery and old country pub.

The area is surrounded by stunning drives, beautiful waterfalls and lovely walks, making it the perfect location to relax for a few days or so.

Tall Timbers Ravenshoe Camping and Accommodation Options

At Tall Timbers, you have the option of camping or staying in one of their motel rooms.  Both are discussed briefly below.

Camping and Van Sites

Behind the motel building is a huge gorgeous area where you can camp in undesignated spots.  Bordering the property is a beautiful flowing stream, which has large pools and some small cascading waterfalls.  This is such a beautiful spot to set up camp and if you don’t need power, you can set up right by the stream.  We even spoke to a couple who said they saw a platypus swimming in the stream right by their campsite.

Powered sites are located closer to the motel building, away from the stream.  However, this is still a beautiful location, with large shady trees and lush green lawns.

Camping rates are $20 for an unpowered site and $30 for a powered site – some of the cheapest rates we’ve ever come across!

Other Accommodation Options

Tall Timbers have just renovated their motel rooms into some gorgeous places to stay.  In fact, they were still in the process of renovating some of their rooms while we were there.

As you can see from above, the rooms are spacious and offer plenty of room for families with a queen bed and bunk beds.  The rooms have air conditioning, fridge, microwave, tea and coffee making facilities and a good size bathroom.  Out the front of the rooms is also a small table and chairs.

We paid $130 for the above room for two adults and one child.

Tall Timbers – Ravenshoe Caravan Park Facilities

Below we briefly cover the amenities and facilities available at the Tall Timbers Motel and Van Park.

Tall Timbers Roadhouse

Given this caravan park is located at the back of the roadhouse, you have the convenience of meals and groceries on site.  The Roadhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with all meals being great value as well as great serving sizes.  We ordered two meals to share between the three of us and we’re more than happy with the amount of food.  We had heard great things about their pizzas, and we were not disappointed!

The roadhouse also serves up great coffee, smoothies and everything else you expect from a good roadhouse, like drinks and snacks.

The roadhouse is open weekdays from 5.30 am to 8.30 pm and at weekends from 6.30 am to 8.30 pm.  Click on the images below to see a larger view of the menus.

Amenities Block

At the back of the motel is a large amenities block that includes showers, toilets and a guest laundry.  If you were camping down by the stream, this would be a bit of a hike, so keep that in mind when choosing a spot to camp.

Tall Timbers, Ravenshoe Caravan Park- Our Verdict

Like I said in the introduction, we just stumbled across this place while en route between Cape York and Charters Towers.  All we were looking for was a place to stay the night where we didn’t have to set up camp.  What we found though, was a gorgeous little property and lovely town that really warranted at least another night to explore.

As soon as we arrived, we just felt calm and at peace.  The property just seems to have this lovely relaxing vibe about it.  As we were strolling around the property, we spoke to a few other campers and like us, were in awe of the beauty of the property.

The campsites and motel rooms are all well priced and the amenities are clean.  Also being right behind the roadhouse is handy too for meals, buying supplies and we were able to top up on fuel before we headed off in the morning.

I reckon you can tell we really loved this place and would have loved to stay longer.  So if you’re in this neck of the woods, I highly recommend stopping in and stay a day or two if you have the time.
